Monthly Archives: November 2009

With all the excitement of Modern Warfare 2 I have neglected to discuss the first person shooter RPG game Borderlands. The first thing I must say is that if you loved Fallout 3 you will love this game. It will steal your life away the very same way Fallout 3 did.

Many gamers were skeptical of this game due to its use of cel-shading or “cartoon” look. I tell those people to look past that one piece and look at the actual gameplay. Just because it looks like a cartoon doesn’t mean it acts like one. One of the biggest things that reeled me into this game is the variety of weapons. There are literally thousands of weapons to blow your enemies apart with. Enemies that include MIDGETS!!!!

Another thing I love about this game is the co-op. Grab your friends to play this game. The loot you find is better but at the same time the enemies are tougher. Or your can duel your friends. Put your weapons to the test against each other and see who comes out on top.

This game was released in October and there is already DLC. A Zombie Island has been added today for your enjoyment. New quests, items and all the fun of killing zombies. This content looks promising and is on my list of things to do other than MW2.

MW2 Multiplayer Awesomeness

I spent this weekend glued to my Xbox racking up XP on Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer. Do you want my honest opinion? I LOVE it! Now I can’t say that I love every single thing about it but overall Infinity Ward did a great job upgrading the great game play from previous games.

I still have this one complaint. The one we all knew was coming; there is no Xbox Live party chat allowed in most game types. If you are in a party chat, no matter what game everyone else is playing, you must transfer to game chat. See my previous post about my feelings on this. But to be blunt, I hate listening to the 8 year olds that feel like they need to sing into their mic.

The next few points are just messages to players. First, do not steal your teammate’s care package if they are standing right there waiting for it. Unless your teammate dies right when it drops and the enemy is going to take it leave it alone. They are not your points to take.

On that note, don’t stand directly underneath the care package drop. The package will land on top of you. This will kill you and cause everyone to laugh at your expense. Don’t believe me? Go ahead and try.

What does rock is that there is no juggernaut perk. No more wasting entire clips to kill the one person who kills you in one shot. Now I know it’s good for gamers first starting out and I admit using it a little in COD4. In reality, there are other more useful perks that will help you get started in the game.

There are so many other good things I could say but you already know if you have played the game. Infinity Ward delivers greatness again with their multiplayer.

Give up the Bluray Fight

Xbox 360 users can keep on dreaming about a Blu-Ray attachment for their consoles.  Ever since Blu-Ray won the format war against HD in 2008, gamers have begged for an add-on.  Now, one year later there’s still no Blu-Ray player and gamers continue to be shot down by Microsoft.  How can Sony get away with beating Microsoft over the head with their ‘Blu-Ray ready PS3’?

“As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360,” Xbox Live’s Major Nelson says in his blog post.  “In fact, the future of home entertainment starts very soon when Xbox 360 becomes the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies.  With a library of thousands of TV shows and movies to choose from, Xbox 360 owners can instantly watch the movies they want, when they want, in the highest form of high definition.”

Downloadable content has always been the way of Xbox and the recent update to Xbox Live has allowed subscribers to download full games.  Movies can be streamed from a user’s Netflix account right to his or her Xbox.  Microsoft will soon be taking the next step and giving HD junkies their fix by streaming HD movies and content right to the 360.

Gamers can continue to plaster protests and complaints across the Xbox forums, or they can celebrate.  Xbox will now have HD, but Blu-Ray will never be the outlet because Blu-Ray is just a brand.  High Definition movies are the product.  Xbox users now have the product without the trip to Best Buy for the actual disk.  The HD movie will be ready to stream right from the couch.  Let the forum battles begin: Blu-Ray or instant HD streaming?

First Impression

Modern Warfare 2 is here gamers and is estimated to have sold 4.7 million copies with in the first 24 hours. All the pre-release issues floated out of our minds as the hour inched towards midnight. Did Infinity Ward deliver?

Although I have not finished the single player story line as of yet, I believe they did. Sometimes the first impression is what matters most. If a story doesn’t jump at me within the first or second chapter or level, chances are I won’t be interested in the rest. When this story line opened and gave a flashback of the previous game I knew that I was dealing with greatness. New characters, new guns, and new feel. Now I haven’t gotten to the multiplayer yet but rest assured you will hear from me when I do.

The story line does contain some material that many might find disturbing and/or offensive. This was announced and videos were leaked before the actual release. Infinity Ward does the right thing here by warning players before starting the campaign that there will be disturbing material. They also give you the option to skip specific scenes.

(SPOILER) It was brave of Infinity Ward to put in a scene where the player is instructed to kill innocent civilians in an airport. Many might think it’s just another chapter to play through, but was it put in for a reason? I found myself hesitating to pull the trigger. Is that why it was included? Did Infinity Ward want gamers to think about what they were playing? Did they want people to feel just a little sick to their stomach as they watched innocent people get slaughtered? Everyone has a different take on the scene but I know that’s how I felt.

Modern Warfare 2 is an amazing game with an amazing story line. To those out there who are only concerned with multiplayer and XP I encourage you to make time for single player. It is well worth your time.
